Rule Changes (Points, Time, # of shots)

The NBA All-Star 3-point Shootout contest has changed a lot in the past few years. The first 30 years of the contest was unchanged. We will explore the changes in this article.

1985-2014 (original rules)

  • 30 points maximum
  • 25 shot total
  • 5 money balls worth (2), 1 per rack
  • 60 second time limit

2014-2020

  • 34 points maximum
  • 25 shots total
  • 9 money balls worth (2)
    • 1 moneyball per 4 racks
    • 5 moneyballs on one rack of choice
  • 4 points more than before
  • same number of shots than before
  • same time limit (60s)

2020+

  • 40 points maximum now
  • 27 shots total
  • 9 original money balls worth (2)
  • however, TWO extra money balls (MTN DEW shots) worth (3)!
    • the new shots are 6' further out
  • time increased by 10s (70s total)
